Cats are independent. Except when they decide your keyboard is the only acceptable place to sit.
Cats are quiet. Except at 5.47am when breakfast is apparently three hours late.
Cats are mysterious. And perhaps that is exactly why cat people love them.
1. Cats are very good at communicating with humans
Studies of feline vocalisations show that cats can be remarkably effective at using different kinds of meows to get human attention. In other words: you may think you trained your cat, but there is a reasonable chance your cat trained you.
2. Their whiskers are serious sensory equipment
Whiskers are not decorative. Cats use them to gather information about their surroundings and judge space, contributing to the extraordinary way they move through tight spaces.
3. A head rub can actually mean something
When cats rub their heads against people, they can deposit scent from glands on their faces. This “bunting” behaviour is part of feline social interaction — so being head-bumped by a cat is basically a tiny furry compliment.
4. Cats have very individual personalities
Some demand attention. Some supervise from a distance. Some are fearless explorers. Others believe the cardboard box your new appliance arrived in is the greatest property investment of their lifetime.
5. They are built for movement
Flexible bodies, powerful legs, excellent balance and the feline righting reflex all contribute to their famous athletic ability.
Cats are… themselves
Perhaps that is the best thing about them. Cats rarely appear desperate for our approval. They simply arrive with personality included.
So whether yours is a Maine Coon, Ragdoll, Siamese, Persian, Bengal, Scottish Fold or another breed entirely, being a cat person is something worth wearing proudly.
